Kyon Energy sells 116 megawatt hours project in Rhineland-Palatinate to Austrian energy supplier VERBUND

- Battery storage plant in Kettig, Rhineland-Palatinate approved and sold to VERBUND
- The project provides 50 megawatts of storage capacity and 116 megawatt hours of storage capacity for the German power grid
- Implementation of the storage project is planned by early 2026

Munich, February 05, 2024. Kyon Energy, leading project developer for large-scale battery storage in Germany, has received approval for a new large-scale battery storage plant in Rhineland-Palatinate. The planned plant will be built in Kettig and will have a storage capacity of 50 megawatts and a storage capacity of 116 megawatt hours. Construction of the plant is planned to start in 2025, with commissioning to follow by the end of 2025/beginning of 2026.

The project was sold in December 2023 to Austria's leading energy company VERBUND, which will operate the plant on a long-term basis after commissioning. The storage plant in Rhineland-Palatinate is thus part of a comprehensive joint framework agreement between Kyon Energy and VERBUND, under which a total of 300 megawatts of storage capacity are to be realized in the German battery storage market.

The storage system will provide decisive network-related system services in the power grid. It stabilizes grid frequency by providing control reserves, compensates for price peaks by providing flexibilities in SPOT and intraday trading, and balances out the overall volatilities in electricity generation from renewable energies.

“Battery storage systems play a central role in integrating new renewables into the energy system. We combine our know-how in the areas of storage and energy markets with expertise for flexibility marketing. In doing so, we are initiating a turnaround and making a significant contribution to the success of the energy revolution,” says Martin Wagner, Managing Director of VERBUND Energy4Business GmbH. “VERBUND is fully focused on the energy future: VERBUND plans to install a total of 1 GW of battery storage capacity by the end of 2030. ”

“An intelligent energy future in Germany depends on the integration of flexible storage options. Battery storage systems are not only key components for the stability and flexibility of the power grid, but also decisive drivers for sustainable energy solutions and the energy revolution as a whole,” says Florian Antwerpen, one of the managing directors of Kyon Energy.

Kyon Energy and VERBUND have already worked together in the past and implemented several projects. For example, the VERBUND storage facilities in Iphofen and Diespeck in Bavaria, each with 20 megawatts of storage capacity, were put into operation at the beginning of 2023.
